Freedom
As July draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on freedom—not just the kind we celebrate on Independence Day, but the deeper liberation that comes from releasing our need to see the entire path ahead. This month, dense fog along my waterfront runs became an unexpected teacher about this paradox.
Running down the shoreline during these gray mornings, I could only see the line of boats closest to me. Everything beyond disappeared into mystery. My first instinct was of something unpleasant—something heavy and hard to navigate. But as I settled into the fog's unique embrace, something shifted. There was profound freedom in not knowing, in being present with just what was visible right now.
This fog became a metaphor for how we navigate uncertainty in life. Yes, not seeing clearly can feel scary or limiting—like not knowing what the future holds in our careers, relationships, or life transitions. But there's also liberation in releasing the illusion that we need to have everything mapped out. When we can't see the future clearly, we're freed from the burden of controlling it.
Where in your life might embracing the "fog" actually offer you more freedom than fighting for clarity?
Here are tips to help you find freedom within uncertainty:
- Focus on what's visible - Instead of straining to see what's ahead, give full attention to what's directly in front of you.
- Release the illusion of control - Accept that clarity often comes through moving forward, not through planning every step.
- Trust your navigation skills - You've successfully navigated uncertainty before; trust that you can do it again.
Your practical takeaway: When feeling constrained or stuck, ask yourself: "What am I trying to control that's actually beyond my influence?" Then redirect that energy toward one small action you can take right now. Freedom often starts with focusing on your actual sphere of influence rather than everything you wish you could control.

Our August gathering details are as follows:
- Next session: Wednesday, August 14th at 4 PM ET
- August topics: Revisiting Emotional Wellbeing & Forward Movement (with more time to explore these important themes)
- Investment: $27 per session
If you'd like to join us, please email me. Our intimate group continues to create meaningful connections and insights.
Closing Reflection
Those foggy runs taught me that freedom isn't about seeing everything clearly—it's about trusting ourselves to navigate with whatever visibility we have—step by step, boat by boat, breath by breath.
What if the unclear path ahead isn't a problem to solve, but an invitation to trust your ability to move forward with whatever visibility you have right now?
